Create your charity's workspace

Checked 2026-08-06 · A couple of minutes to read

Go to charitycontrol.org/signup, enter your name, email and charity number, then click the confirmation link we email you. We pre-fill your trustees and filing deadlines from the Charity Commission register. If your charity's income is £100,000 or less, it's free with no card and no time limit.

Create your workspace

  1. Go to charitycontrol.org/signup. If you've just finished the free Charity Control Check, click Create my workspace on your results page instead and they carry over.
  2. Enter your name and email. Your email becomes your sign-in, so use one you check often.
  3. Choose your role, for example Chair or Treasurer.
  4. Enter your charity's name and, if you have it, your charity number. The number is optional but worth adding: we use it to pre-fill your workspace from the public register and to check whether you qualify for the free plan.
  5. Say whether you're a trustee at the charity or an advisor setting it up for one.
  6. Click Email me a confirmation link.
  7. Open the email called Confirm your CharityControl workspace and click Create my workspace. The link lasts 24 hours.
  8. A page shows your workspace's new address, for example meadowbank-animal-rescue.charitycontrol.co.uk. Click Create my workspace to finish.

What we pre-fill from the register

When you give a charity number, we copy in what the Charity Commission already publishes: your trustees (marked for you to confirm), your website, your financial year end and your charitable objects. If an annual return is due, it appears in your compliance calendar as a real deadline on day one. If the register shows a return already overdue, we flag it so you can put it right straight away.

Common questions

Does signing up cost anything? No. We never ask for a card at signup. If your charity's latest income on the register is £100,000 or less, CharityControl stays free. See what the free plan includes.

Will anyone at my charity be told? No. Creating a workspace tells nobody. You choose who to invite, and when.

What if my charity already has a workspace? Each charity number can only have one. If yours exists, you'll be offered a request-access form instead, and whoever runs the workspace can approve you.

The governance behind this: our free guide on charitycontrol.org explains the why in plain English.
